ayurvedic cleanse: part 2

"ayurvedic cleanse: part 1" is an overview of how to simply use kitchari and warm water and fresh ginger tea for the monodiet cleanse. in this part 2 post, i'll share a few simple recipes to add to the cleanse, if you want a little variety: a digestive tea, a green detox soup, and kanjee.

so for beverages, again, start each morning enjoying a tall glass of warm water with the juice of 1/2 a lemon or lime. drinking with meals is not ideal, unless it's a small glass of warm water or herbal tea. too much extra fluid while eating dilutes our digestive enzymes. in between meals, plain warm water, hot water with fresh slices of ginger root, or a digestive tea, like the one below, are healing beverage choices:

in this monodiet cleanse, a full batch of kitchari is made each morning and portioned for breakfast, lunch + dinner. midday is when our digestive fires are strongest, so it is the best time to eat our largest meal of the day.  kitchari can be augmented midday with a healing green-vegetable soup like this green detox soup (the "greens" in this soup can be swapped with other in-season green vegetables to adjust to your liking or what's available).

finally, kanjee is an "all-the-time" healing food, and it means "gruel." it is great for a simple breakfast or a light dinner during this cleanse.

barley kanjee

time: 1 hour       servings: 4

ingredients:
  • 1 cup barley
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp raisins
instructions:

1. in a large saucepan, boil the water, salt, and spices on high heat. add the barley to the pan. allow the water to come to a boil again, then turn down the heat.

2. cover the barley and simmer for 1 hour, until the grains begin to split. ladle 2 cups of kanjee per serving.

tip: quinoa is a great alternative to barley in the summer season.

as i shared in part 1, deeper cleanses and fasts are new to me. this is my first ayurvedic cleanse. my goal is to stick to just kitchari and warm water or fresh ginger tea to keep this first experience simple, but it is nice to have a couple alternative recipes available if i want a little change. my aim is to complete at least 3 full days. i'll take it one day at a time. before i begin i will list my current symptoms and signs of needed healing in my journal, and i look forward to noting at the end how the experience goes and any changes that i notice in myself.

so grateful to kate o'donnell for the above digestive tea and kanjee recipes and for the the healing guidance on how to walk through such a cleanse. may these healing cleanses lead to new healing yearly-habits. and i dedicate this first ayurvedic cleanse to our Creator-Savior, the One who is Life, the One whose Ways have brought about all the healing i've experienced so far. His beautiful Healing Ways have been here all my life (and since the beginning of time), i just couldn't see yet. grateful for His patience and Love for me and for us all.

blessed Healing to us all,
amy luella
